Friday Morning Memo: September 2, 2022

I Thought That This Quote Was Fitting Since I Referenced Katherine Johnson during our Faculty Meeting.

I. Praise and Thanks:

  • Thanks to everyone for a positive and uplifting week! Thank you for being that supportive presence for our mini-Mountaineers! I have observed so many wonderful things happening for our mini-Mountaineers. Please enjoy the long weekend and take time to relax, refresh, and recharge!
  • Thanks for the positive texts and invitations to visit your class! Please keep those coming! I will try to make every invitation. I LOVE being in your classrooms!
II. Today's Events:
  • 8:45-9:45 a.m.-BOG Practice
III. Reminders and Updates:

A. Leave Day Submission and Going Off Campus
  • Please be sure to contact me as soon as possible if you know you are going to absent during the school day. That also includes if you have to leave school during work hours. By letting me know, I can ensure you have coverage and our students are supervised.
  • Remember to use the electronic form to submit for any leave you are taking. Melanie Hicks-Lane needs that documentation for payroll purposes.
  • All of our leave policies are in our staff handbook. Please be sure to review them.
  • Also, please let me know if you are going to miss a faculty meeting.
B. Optional Book Study Opportunity:
  • The front cover of Innovate Inside the Box by Katie Novak and George Couros has the following quote endorsement from Daniel Pink on the front cover: "If you're looking to bring creativity to student learning amid all the constraints educators face, this is the book for you."
  • All are invited to participate in this book with partners from Appalachian State University, Elkin, WS/FCS and other community partners.
  • We plan to meet four times via Zoom during the following dates and times:
    • Wednesday, October 5, 3:00-4:00 p.m.
    • Wednesday, November 2, 3:00-4:00 p.m.
    • Wednesday, December 7, 3:00-4:00 p.m.
    • Wednesday, January 18, 3:00-4:00 p.m.
  • Click Here to sign up so we can order books for you. Friday, September 9 is the last day to sign-up.
  • This is great opportunity to share and discuss ideas on applying innovative approaches to our lab school.
C. We Will H.I.K.E. Higher: Solutions Building & Classroom Walkthroughs
  • I have shared with a copy of the presentation from today's faculty meeting.
  • Please join me in next steps for our first "Solutions Building" Session next Wednesday, September 7 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the Media Center.
  • I am looking for proactive solutions and ideas for next steps to HIKE Higher with our four movements:
    • High Expectations
    • Intentional Instructional Strategies
    • Innovative Approaches
    • Focused PLTs
  • All are invited and we will have future Solutions Building Sessions if you are unable to make the first one.
  • Also, a classroom walkthrough tool is being developed to provide instructional feedback and data gathering. We will share that instrument with you soon.
D. People Admin/Professional Goals for this Year.
  • Now that we know our school performance grades, we will need to take next steps with the People Admin platform for everyone to develop individual goals for professional growth.
  • This is a requirement for all university employees.
  • Please stay tuned for further instructions.
E. Positive Stories Home:
  • You are encouraged to share either an individual Class Dojo Message or positive phone call home for our parents. Let's celebrate our joyful first week of school! We are doing world-changing work!
  • Why not do your own version of "Praise and Thanks" and share the great things happening in your Classroom Story on Class Dojo? (Be mindful of student confidentiality when sharing pictures.)
  • Stay tuned for Principal Good News Calls Home!
Let's our first week of this amazing school year on a high and hopeful note! We will HIKE higher and I believe in each and everyone of you. Thank you for making good things happen this week for our mini-Mountaineers and each other.

Remember that Tuesday is Founder's Day! We are wear our App State Wear and/or Black & Gold. Please encourage our students to do the same. Please send a Class Dojo message reminding parents of this.

Tuesday is also Independence Day! Students will walk in the building on their own to Ready, Set, HIKE! Please send a Class Dojo message reminding parents of this.
