Thursday Morning Memo: September 22, 2022

 


I. Praise and Thanks: 
  • Thanks to EVERYONE for excellent stewardship during our schoolwide events with the Office of Diversity Read Aloud and the Duke Energy Performance. I appreciate you welcoming our guests into our family and treating like family. 
  • Thanks to Monique Johnson for the invitation to read aloud to her 4th Grade Class. I enjoyed the chance to share the Dr. Ellen Ochoa Book and few artifacts from my childhood. I was truly moved and touched by the questions/sharing for her class. 
II. Today's Events:
  • 8:00-8:25 a.m.-Schoolwide Morning Meeting via Zoom
  • 11:20 a.m.-12:20 p.m.-3rd Grade BOG Data Dive with Kori Trainor
III. Reminders and Updates:

A. Instructional Reminder: We Will HIKE Higher!
  • Please make sure that students are aware of the learning objective for every lesson. 
  • We must maintain instruction aligned with standards for all students. 
  • Remember to teach to standards in every lesson, every student, every day. 

B. Invention Convention Huddle: This Friday-An Innovation Opportunity! 

  • Please consider joining me on an opportunity to further efforts with Invention Convention at the Academy. This is a great opportunity to ignite the spark of innovation and creativity for our mini-Mountaineers. 
  • This Friday at 7:15 a.m.,.  I will host a brief huddle in my office for anyone interested in learning more.

C. Author Visit This Friday:
  • Zahra Marwan is visiting the Academy this Friday. She is the author of Where Butterflies Fill the Sky. This is due to our connection with Bookmarks. 
  • 10:00-10:30: 3-5 (Specialists will need to bring 4th grade to the Media Center and then teachers can meet them there at the conclusion of specials. 3rd will have to alternate their recess time a bit.
  • 10:35-11:05 K-2 (Specialists will need to bring 2nd grade to the Media Center and teachers will meet them there - they will probably need to go straight to lunch from there.)
D. EDU 2000 Students Visit This Friday:
  • Remember that we have some future educators from Appalachian State University joining us this Friday. 
  • Please see previous communication on this. It is always a thrill having our friends from the school on the mountain visit. Please be sure to exemplify the excellence and compassion you always do for our visitors. 
E. October 14 Lab School Meet-Up:
  • Please consider spending some social time with our Elkin Lab School Friends on October 14 at the Playground in Clemmons. Dr. Snow sent an email on this event and click HERE to sign up. 
F. How Did I Miss My Tribute to "September" on September 21?
  • I usually sing this song on September 21 and I was moving so fast that I forgot to do so. I can't hit those notes like I used to, but here is the original instead:

  I. Praise and Thanks: Thanks to Kim Britt and Jessica Hill for integrating Music in their classroom. I heard joyful sounds from our Kinder students! I appreciate the intentional efforts to uplift and motivate our mini-Mountaineers.  Thanks to Carla Clayton and Ayden Tackett for their efforts with our Book Fair! I appreciate the teachable moment they provided to our students on how sales tax is figured in a purchase. What a great way to make learning relevant in support of our Math SIT Goal! II.   Today Is The First Day of Hispanic Heritage Month! I have a copy of the amazing picture book, The Astronaut With A Song For The Stars: The Story of Dr. Ellen Ochoa.  Please let me know if you would like for me to visit your classroom and read it to our students. It's a wonderful and inspiring book about an inspiring Space Pioneer.  See below for the book cover and a sample page from the book: I.
