The Academy at Middle Fork Weekly Memo: November 21-22, 2022


I. Praise and Thanks:
  • A tremendous wave of thanks for EVERYONE at the Academy! You are making a difference in the lives of our mini-Mountaineers. You are appreciated and I am grateful for your hard work and dedication. When you add a smile to a child's day, you help make the world a better place for them. I see many smiles from our kids thanks to you. I hope that this upcoming Thanksgiving Break is a peaceful and relaxing time for everyone. You truly deserve it. 
II. This Week's Events:

Monday, November 21: #CelebrateMonday

  • 8:00-8:30 a.m.-Schoolwide Morning Meeting via Zoom
  • EC Department meets with Heather Horton of ERG for Standards-Based Grading PD-Times TBA
  • 3:00-4:00 p.m.-Faculty Meeting
III. Reminders and Updates:

A. EC with ERG on Tuesday
  • There will be no PLTs this week for Classroom Teachers. 
  • The EC Department will meet with Heather Horton of ERG for Standards-Based Grading PD. The schedule for that is still being determined.
B. EC Upcoming
  • We will be scheduling time after the Thanksgiving Break for Classroom and Specials Teachers to sit down and meet with EC Teachers and myself to review IEPs. I want to make sure that everyone is on the same page for our students regarding scheduled times of support, accommodations, and modifications. 
  • Once we have a date for this, I will be sure to notify all in advance. 
C. #CelebrateMonday Is Coming! 
  • Let's kick off our short week on an upbeat note with #CelebrateMonday! 
  • #CelebrateMonday is an opportunity to intentionally start the week off an upbeat and positive note. 
  • We will have a special morning meeting this Monday at 8:00 a.m. via Zoom. 
  • Please see my email on this with more details. 
  • You are welcome to wear something fun or colorful! 
  • We do want students to participate in the giant #CelebrateMonday Lobby Display that is coming. Have students write down one specific thing that gives them reason to #CelebrateMonday. It might be something about our Academy or another positive thing happening. We will gather those sticky notes later in the day for the display. 
  • If you are on Twitter, please feel free to tweet out the positive things happening in your classroom using the #CelebrateMonday hashtag and tag in @appstateacademy. 

D. Lobby Signage and Tech Updates
  • Please be sure you read Matt Cooke's email on the Lobby Signage. Matt has hooked up the TV in the lobby to a PC. We want to have slideshows, announcements, and fun things posted as our students, guests, and families travel through that area. You can send things to him to show off your class and other amazing things happening in your classroom. 
  • Be sure to read in that email the directions Matt Cooke provided on the Encryption Box that may pop up on your computer. 
E. Faculty Meeting This Tuesday and Friendsgiving
  • We are meeting with Triad Restorative Justice on Tuesday for our Faculty Meeting. 
  • The HIKE/Restorative Justice Team met with Triad Restorative Justice last week to provide feedback and needs for the next stages of professional development for implementation of restorative practices in the classroom. 
  • At the conclusion of that meeting, we are asking that classroom teachers provide your 2nd Quarter Goals and Incentives. Please be sure that you have connected with your commitment partner prior to the meeting. Consult Heather Wham's email on this to review.
  • Thanks to those volunteering to add to the Friendsgiving Pot Luck! 
  • Thanks in advance for bringing an open mind and growth mindset to this meeting!

  I. Praise and Thanks: Thanks to Kim Britt and Jessica Hill for integrating Music in their classroom. I heard joyful sounds from our Kinder students! I appreciate the intentional efforts to uplift and motivate our mini-Mountaineers.  Thanks to Carla Clayton and Ayden Tackett for their efforts with our Book Fair! I appreciate the teachable moment they provided to our students on how sales tax is figured in a purchase. What a great way to make learning relevant in support of our Math SIT Goal! II.   Today Is The First Day of Hispanic Heritage Month! I have a copy of the amazing picture book, The Astronaut With A Song For The Stars: The Story of Dr. Ellen Ochoa.  Please let me know if you would like for me to visit your classroom and read it to our students.
