The Academy at Middle Fork Weekly Memo: January 3-7, 2023

 


I. Praise and Thanks: 
  • Thanks to Denise Gallimore, Megan Garner, and Matt Cooke for their presence at Christmas in the City on Saturday, December 17 in Downtown Winston-Salem. We were able to put many smiles on the faces of children with the snowglobe craft and snowglobe photo booth. A very special thanks to Denise Gallimore for organizing this event, setting up & taking down the booth, and getting parent volunteers to participate. This was another meaningful opportunity for the Academy to get our name in the community. It really was a special event and I am grateful.

III. Reminders and Updates: 

A. January 3rd Teacher Workday:
  • All teachers and certified staff are required to be at the Academy on Monday, January 3rd from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. 
  • The first half of the day is yours to work in your classrooms, plan with colleagues, and just catch up. Lunch will be on your own for that day. 
  • From 1:00-4:00 p.m., we will gather in the Media Center for "Disrupting Silos." This will be a collaborative discussion on Innovation. 
  • Your input, ideas, insights, and dreams are needed for this discussion. 
  • Please bring a device or laptop along with earbuds/headphones. 
  • Snacks and refreshments will be provided for this interactive time together. 
B. 2nd Quarter Report Cards and Grades:
  • The 2nd Quarter ends on January 26. 
  • There is a teacher workday scheduled for January 27. 
  • All 2nd Quarter Grades are due to Paula Anderson on Monday, January 30 by 4:00 p.m. Grades 3-5 Grade Verification Sheets are due to Paula Anderson as well. 
  • Report Cards are scheduled to go home with students on February 9. 
C. PLT Schedule 
  • We will not PLTs this week. PLTs will resume the week of January 9.
  • Please stay tuned for communication on PLTs.
D. Staff Attendance Review Meetings
  • I am scheduling individual discussions with staff members who have accrued 10 or more cumulative absences or are close to having 7 cumulative absences. This also applies to anyone who been late to work 3 or more times. The staff attendance and tardiness policy is in the staff handbook. 
E. For Your Toolbox: "Using Escape Rooms to Enhance Literacy in Elementary Schools."

  I. Praise and Thanks: Thanks to Kim Britt and Jessica Hill for integrating Music in their classroom. I heard joyful sounds from our Kinder students! I appreciate the intentional efforts to uplift and motivate our mini-Mountaineers.  Thanks to Carla Clayton and Ayden Tackett for their efforts with our Book Fair! I appreciate the teachable moment they provided to our students on how sales tax is figured in a purchase. What a great way to make learning relevant in support of our Math SIT Goal! II.   Today Is The First Day of Hispanic Heritage Month! I have a copy of the amazing picture book, The Astronaut With A Song For The Stars: The Story of Dr. Ellen Ochoa.  Please let me know if you would like for me to visit your classroom and read it to our students.
