The Academy Weekly Memo: January 15-19, 2024

 


I. Praise and Thanks: 
  • A special thanks to Darron Daniels for his efforts in organizing our Safety Fest this Friday. Mr. Daniels exemplifies The Portrait element of "being committed to the school’s vision and mission."
  • Congratulations to Alicia Kinzer and Heather Wham for recent social media recognition for being exemplars for "The Portrait of a Lab School Team Member."
  • A special shoutout to Ms. Marshall's 5th Grade Class! On Friday, I was making rounds and I seized upon an opportunity on a teachable moment regarding Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The class was attentive, respectful, and asked excellent questions. I appreciate the efforts Ms. Marshall makes to build a classroom community. It was evident during my visit on Friday.

III. Reminders and Updates

A. Micro Goal
  • Work on the Reading Workshop Mico-Goal is underway. 
  • This is a schoolwide movement designed to promote the academic growth in Reading for all of our mini-Mountaineers. 
  • The expectation is that everyone is working their part of the plan with full effort. We got this for our mini-Mountaineers!
B. Faculty Meeting This Tuesday
  • We will gather in the Learning Lab this Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. for our Faculty Meeting. 
  • Please bring your laptops. 
  • The meeting agenda will be sent in a separate e-mail. 
C. Design Team Meetings This Friday
  • As shared at the January 2nd Faculty Meeting, we are adjusting our Tuesday Meeting Line-Up. We are substituting the Design Team Meeting time on Tuesdays to accommodate the newly -formed TA/Academic Tutor Meeting. 
  • Design Team Meetings will now take place on the 3rd and 4th Fridays of the month. 
  • This Friday from 8:30-9:30 a.m., the following Design Teams will meet: Culture/Climate, Curriculum/Academics, and Personnel/Human Capital.

D. Visitors This Week
  • Dr. Angie Harris and Dr. Lindsey Griendling will visit on Tuesday to observe Shared Reading/Reading Workshop session across Grade Spans. This is rescheduled due to last week's school cancellation. On Thursday, a team from Alexander County Schools will visit to observe Learning Lab Classes and Schoolwide Recess. This time will include the superintendent and various school administrators. 
E. Testing This Week
  • Check-In Testing takes place this week for Grades 3-5 in Reading and Math. 
  • Selected staff are reminded to follow instructions given by Kori Trainor. 
F. 2024-25 School Calendar
  • The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools' Board of Education voted on next year's school calendar. At the Academy, we follow the same calendar.

  I. Praise and Thanks: Thanks to Kim Britt and Jessica Hill for integrating Music in their classroom. I heard joyful sounds from our Kinder students! I appreciate the intentional efforts to uplift and motivate our mini-Mountaineers.  Thanks to Carla Clayton and Ayden Tackett for their efforts with our Book Fair! I appreciate the teachable moment they provided to our students on how sales tax is figured in a purchase. What a great way to make learning relevant in support of our Math SIT Goal! II.   Today Is The First Day of Hispanic Heritage Month! I have a copy of the amazing picture book, The Astronaut With A Song For The Stars: The Story of Dr. Ellen Ochoa.  Please let me know if you would like for me to visit your classroom and read it to our students.
